Delos

The island of Delos is a sacred Greek island that according to the mythology was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, one of the most significant sanctuaries in the Greek world, and the Ionians’ biggest religious and political center. The remains of Delos, one of the largest and most brilliantly structured communities of Greco-Roman antiquity, have been well preserved, making the site the best preserved ancient settlement in Greece.

The island appears in Greek history, as a key worship center of the Ionian world, that later became a massive political entity in the Aegean islands. According to the Greek mythology, Leto escaped in the island, pursued by the envious Hera, to give birth to two Gods and Zeus’s children, Apollo and Artemis. Delos was not the initial name of the island, the ancient Greeks believed that the island was floating in the water, and that was the reason that they did not know about it. Further to Apollo and Artemis’ birth the island from invisible – Adelos, became visible – Delos.

Delos and Rhenia (the neighboring desert island), are protected by the Ministry of Culture, boat docking and overnight stays without a specific authorization are forbidden in both islands.

We strongly believe that nothing compares to the emotion evoked by the exploring of the remnants of ancient Delos. The ancient settlement with streets and marketplaces, public buildings and shrines, beautiful houses and stores, cisterns, columns, ancient wells, and, of course, mosaics that transport travellers back in time.
