Folegandros island, with its tranquil ambiance, kind hospitality, undiluted architecture and lovely beaches, is a pristine destination for an authentic and tranquil Cycladic getaway. Although the Island is small, its landscape is made up of deep blue waters, numerous coasts and miles of paths among the short stone walls over barren hills, making it ideal for hiking, swimming and sailing. Folegandros’ beautiful scenery, delectable cuisine, untamed beauty and laid-back pace establish the island as one of the most charming off-the-beaten-path destinations in the Mediterranean.
The island’s ethereal, but natural beauty is portrayed by bougainvilleas drooping over balconies, cubic whitewashed homes, and precipitous cliffs. Chora, the capital of the island, perches perilously on a sheer cliff, flanked by graceful, picturesue Cycladic churches and traditional tavernas with Aegean vistas. Chora is undoubtedly one of the island settlements with the most breathtaking setting. The fortified medieval Kastro, at 200 meters height up the cliff, is the oldest section of the capital and has been superbly maintained. The Church of the Panagia, a distinctive feature of Folegandros, is located up on a stunning white-washed route winding up to the mountainside above Chora, its three domes make it a unique example of Aegean religious architecture., and offers the greatest view in the island with vistas to Milos, Sifnos and Kimolos.
The beaches of Folegandros are appealing and lovely, with a variety of golden sand or tiny pebbled bays, many accessible only by boat. Some of the most known include Angali, Agios Georgios, Vardia, Livadaki, Galifos, and Katergo, they are mostly not organized, as well as the majority of the beaches in Folegandros. The amount of hiking paths in Folegandros is far bigger than the asphalted roadways, flagstones are used to pave most of the the several pathways that were carved out by generations of farmers and shepherds to reach their pastures and crops on the hills of the island.
