The Cycladic island of Amorgos combines the best aspects of the Cyclades—great beaches, regional customs, picturesque villages and breathtaking views of the Aegean. A place where ancient customs, winding roads, and isolated villages will make you forget all about modern life and busy cities. The island is relatively unknown; Mostly popular from the Luc Besson’s cult classic The Big Blue. The island is ideal for free-diving enthusiasts and hiker numerous trails, secluded beaches, the shipwreck, abandoned Cycladic windmills and remnants of ancient settlements.
The Chora and fortress of Amorgos located upon a stiff hill to keep it in the old times hidden from the pirates’ sight, represent the Byzantine and Venetian past of the island. At the same time Troulos’ nine abandoned windmills, Platystenos’ stores and cafés, and the Monk’s Mill Square with genuine sea views, represent the Cycladic side of this scenic village. Its castle offers spectacular views over the Aegean and the picturesque Voreina district is full of cottages, wells and olive presses. Katapola and Aigiali, the two ports of the island provide numerous cafes and eateries, beach with loungers and they both were ancient cities of Amorgos.
The beaches of Amorgos are extremely gorgeues, with pure blue waters, sea caves and lovely ambiance. Agia Anna, Agios Pavlos, Nikouria, Aegiali, Maltezi and Ammoudi are only some of the several beaches scattered on the island, most of them virgin and unspoiled with a few exceptions. The magnificent Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery is possibly the most peculiar monastery in the Aegean, it is impossibly tall and thin and really inserted into a mountain. The monastery has 300 steps until its tight entrance and it raises up to 8 stories, each of them 5 meters wide. The church is approximately 1000 years old and the view the location offers are revitalizing and breathtaking.
