Anafi is an authentic Cycladic island, located in the Aegean Sea, although it has a distinct aesthetic from it, it is located relatively close to the famous Cycladic island of Santorini. Anafi is a small, laid-back island that has managed to remain undiscovered and unaffected by overdevelopment. It is a wonderful place with magnificent beaches and crystal clear waters. According to Greek mythology, the island sprang from the depths of the Aegean Sea to provide sanctuary to a group of heroes in Greek mythology, the Argonauts.
Chora, the island’s capital, truly glows, amphitheatrically constructed on the remnants of a Venetian castle, at a height of 200 meters and offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Chora is the island’s activity hub, and features the majority of the island’s restaurants, bars, and services. The picturesque architecture and relaxing, unhurried pace are captivating from the first stroll in the small alleyways of the town. Little whitewashed cottages and gardens in full bloom will remind you of Anafiotica, Athens’ island-like neighborhood created by highly trained Anafi artisans. Several natural wonders are hidden around the main town, such as caves, natural pathways, and sites with amazing views, ready to be explored. At sunset, enjoy the infinite view of the sea and lose yourself in romantic reflections against the backdrop of the two windmills on the hillside.
Aside from its quaint town, volcanic cliffs, and beautiful beaches, additional areas of interest worth seeing include a few churches scattered over the island. The fact that everything is within walking distance of the main town is one of the island’s finest features. The island’s spectacular natural scenery, along with its calm ambiance, has made it a favorite for campers and outdoorsy travelers.
Anafi’s beaches, with their raw beauty and pristine seas, provide a captivating, crowd-free experience with endless hours of pleasure and relaxation. The sandy beaches of Agios Nikolaos, Katsouni, and Klisidi are some of the most popular ones, swim in the blue seas of Roukounas’ beach, or the gorgeous gold shores of Flamourou and Prasies. Visit the second tallest monolithic limestone after Gibraltar, Kalamos rock, in the east of the island, the ancient temple of Apollo the Anafian, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, and Anafi’s old settlement atop Kasteli hill and the spectacular necropolis with its colossal tombs and sculptures.
