Milos is considered by many the most unique island in the Aegean Sea, it is located in the southwest Cyclades and boasts a number of unique natural landscapes created by volcanic activity, including fascinating rock formations, strange soil colours and several jaw dropping beaches. Its magnificent colors and terrain rank it between the most striking islands in the Cyclades. The island provides to wanderers spectacular scenery, showing its volcanic past, featuring hot springs, caves, geological formations and unique beaches with unusual beauty, colored red, pink, and orange by its volcanic rocks.
The island’s tranquil natural scenery is the ideal backdrop for romantic getaways, as well as for nature lovers and outdoorsy travellers. There are countless caverns, dark dungeons, and green beaches to explore in this island. Milos is a timeless Cycladic jewel, breathtaking, with its captivating beauty, standing out for its magnificent ambience, rich history, gorgeous fishing towns, delicious gastronomy, and blue bays.
Plaka, the capital of the island is situated on a hill 220 meters above sea level. This lovely village features the iconic white washed Cycladic architectural style, picturesque churches and small alleys. Some of the most picturesque villages of Milos are Klima, Emborios and Mandrakia, between other beautiful fishing villages accompanied by modest whitewashed cottages with colorful shutters and boat garages where fishermen put their colorful miniature boats.
The island also boasts a number of major archaeological monuments, such as the early Christian catacombs and the Bronze Age village of Phylakopi, as well as noteworthy museums, like as the Mining Museum. The island is also the birthplace of the iconic marble statue of Venus of Milo, discovered in 1820, which can be found today at the Louvre Museum.
The beaches on this island are famous for their unique formation. The most famous amongst them are the stunning Sarakiniko, which has a lunar setting with sparkling white volcanic rock formations and crystal pure blue waves, and Kleftiko, another particular beach that can only be reached by boat. This historic pirate refuge, with its towering rock formations and green seas, is the island’s intimidating hallmark.
Island hopping and day trips with a boat or yacht are an ideal combination with Milos since the island is close to Kimolos, Sifnos, Paros and Polyaigos islands.
