Kimolos is one of the most beautiful islands in the western Cyclades, near the island of Milos. It is a small treasure gleaming under the Aegean sun; its unparalleled beauty, tranquil mood and natural scenery are brimming with authenticity and charm. Its name originates from the Greek word of chalk, kimolia, due to the island’s chalk mining heritage. It has volcanic soil, a unique diversity of minerals, colorful glittering pebbles, clear seas, grey-white rocks with intriguing patterns and hot springs cascading onto its breathtaking beaches.
Chorio, the island’s capital with its idyllic simplicity, is divided into two quarters: Messa and Exo Kastro. Chorio features Cycladic architecture and scenic environment due to its white washed homes with blooming gardens, traditional cafes and taverns and friendly residents. Significant landmarks as the historic castle of the village, built in Venetian style, dates back from the 13th to the 17th century and served as a fortification against the pirate raids in the past centuries, the Folk & Maritime museum and the Archeological Museums, are located in this village.
Without a doubt, the island’s most valuable asset is its beaches. Agioklima with its hot spring, Prassa, Aliki, Agios Georgios, and Kalamitsi are some of the most known and beautiful coasts around Kimolos. There are also several trekking old routes that are still utilized and lead to every corner of the island, one of them climbs up to the remarkable geological formation of the rock of Skiadi, a massive rock resembling a mushroom. Through them a wanderer will discover the island’s distinctive habitat, which includes myrtle plants, fig trees, vines, small lizards, and the sanctuary of the Mediterranean seal, monachus monachus, on the island’s northern coast.
