Sifnos island, located in the southwest corner of the Cyclades between Serifos and Milos islands, is known for its traditional Cycladic architecture, which includes cubic whitewashed dwellings, quaint towns, over 300 gorgeous churches, dovecotes, and a lot of little ceramic stores. The island mixes its scenic environment with tasty delicacies, traditional local customs, and the local artisan culture. Sifnos is an island of balance and harmony, offering wonderful time and the greatest vacation for families and couples to unwind and relax! Despite its sophisticated culture and “Cycladic chic” atmosphere, Sifnos maintains a modest profile that instills a sense of serenity.

There is a range of diverse beaches on the island, from Panagia Chryssopigi beach, beneath the namesake of the Monastery at the same area, where you may dive from rocky ledges, to organized ones with beach bars and taverns as in Kamares, the port community of the island, Platys Gialos the longest beach of the island, and the virtually circle formed bay of Vathy with tranquil, deep blue water and St Taxiarchis, a 16th-century church, situated on the pier, at the edge of the beach. Off the beaten track bays may be found all around the island, especially with a boat/ yacht rental.

Apollonia, the capital of the island, is home to the island’s folklore museum, the library, cottages with brilliantly colored doors and window frames, bougainvillea and geranium pots, tiny whitewashed alleyways that form a maze to walk around the town and its local shops and tavernas. The name of the town is derived from the God of the Sun and light, Apollo.

A few kilometers outside of the capital, the medieval village of Artemonas is located, noted for its neoclassical mansions, well-kept small alleys, whitewashed courtyards, wonderfully sculpted clay chimney tops and breathtaking views of the island. Some of Sifnos’ most famous eateries and patisseries are located in this village. Artemonas is said to be named after Apollo’s sister, Goddess of wilderness and nature, Artemis.

Absolutely breathtaking scenic views around the island may be found at the fortified medieval settlement of Kastro, the remnants of the Mycenaean fortified acropolis and the chapel of Agios Andreas, the summit of Agios Andreas Hill, the courtyard of the lovely Virgin Mary church, which reaches a panoramic view from Platis Yialos to Kimolos, as well as the church of St Simeon, overlooking Kamares’ port.
